This short note explains how to configure Tor-Browser to enable sound in Debian 10.

It took me some time to get the sound fixed and as I did not find any tips on the Internet, I thought to share my solutions with you.

I tested to ways to enable sound in Tor-Browser. Chose one of the following:

  • Configure the torbrowser-launcher Debian package from Backports
  • Install the Tor-Browser tarball from the Tor project site

Configure the torbrowser-launcher Debian package from Backports

  1. Enable the Backports-repository

  2. Install torbrowswer-launcher

    sudo apt install torbrowser-launcher

  3. Modify the Apparmor-configuration1

    cd /etc/apparmor.d
    sudo mv torbrowser.Browser.firefox torbrowser.Browser.firefox.orig
    sudo wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/micahflee/torbrowser-launcher/develop/apparmor/torbrowser.Browser.firefox

  4. Restart service

    sudo service apparmor restart
    sudo service apparmor status

    Expected output

    systemd[1]: Starting Load AppArmor profiles...
    apparmor.systemd[3319]: Restarting AppArmor
    apparmor.systemd[3319]: Reloading AppArmor profiles
    apparmor.systemd[3319]: Ignoring: 'torbrowser.Browser.firefox.orig'
    systemd[1]: Started Load AppArmor profiles.

Install the Tor-Browser tarball from the Tor project site

If the above does not work for, try the following:

  1. Download the Tor-Browser tarball from the project's website.

  2. Follow the installation instructions in How to Install and Use the Tor Browser on Linux
